Series name (source language): Escrivania de Marina
Consists of: 120 folders
Series Description:
The institution of the Maritime Scribe was created in 1751 so that all the deeds and notary records related to the navy and those people under its jurisdiction –including all maritime workers- were done by the same scribes. The capital of each maritime province had its own Maritime Scribe, and these series preserve the documents generated by the twelve Maritime Scribes of Barcelona who held the office until 1876, when the institution was closed. The most important documents contained in the series are crew contracts, bonds of navigation, property titles of ships, sales of ships and, until the 1820s documents related to maritime guilds such as accords, apprenticeship contracts or mastership exams.
