The Hospital of Santa Creu was the general civil hospital of Barcelona from 1401 to 1926. Funded by alms and bequests, the hospital functioned with the work of volunteers and religious brotherhoods to take care of the poor people of the city. Located in a gothic building in the Old City, the hospital was moved to a new building located in the area of l’Eixample in the first decades of the twentieth century due to the growth of the population of Barcelona. The archival collection of the old hospital is preserved nowadays in the modern building of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau. The collection contains all the documents related to the work, management, funding, and infrastructures of the hospital.
