Archival collection history :
This is the main Spanish archive of the Navy and maritime activities. The Archive contains documents of the Ministry of the Navy and other previous institutions, from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century. Created in 1948, this archive collected the documentation of the Ministry of the Navy and of the three Maritime Departments of the Navy: in Cartagena, Cadiz and El Ferrol. This prolific source, with an approximate volume of documents of 12 km, is essential for the history of the Spanish Navy. Furthermore, due to the broad responsibilities of the Navy, this Archive is a valuable source to study issues such as the evolution of shipbuilding, fishing and commercial navigation.
