The Historical Section is one of the two sections of the Naval Archive of Cartagena. The Naval Archive of Cartagena is a military archive but contents lots of information about the merchant marine and the fishing marine since the Navy had was accountable for these civil issues. The Historical section is basically composed of the documents generated by the Maritime Department of Cartagena, from its creation until approximately 1930, with a volume of around 3000 files. The Maritime Department of Cartagena integrated all the ports of the East Mediterranean Spanish coast, from Catalonia to Murcia, including the Balearic Islands. The Archive also holds a collection of more than 8000 Spanish nautical charts and some 3,500 charts from different countries, from the 18th century until the present. The set is completed with a collection of Spanish and foreign nautical rutters, navigation books, books on astronomy, lighthouses, nautical almanacs, etc. There are also blueprints of ships built in the Arsenal of Cartagena, of buildings, machinery et al. from the 18th to the 20th century.
