Prof. Jordi Ibarz (Research Leader of T.I.G./University of Barcelona group)

Jordi Ibarz (Barcelona, 1962) is a professor of Modern History at the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Barcelona and member of the research group “Work, Institutions and Gender”. His main research interests are on labour history, especially that referring to dock workers and glass workers.

His dissertation topic was about labour relations in the port of Barcelona during Francoism, but his current research looks towards a more distant past. He works with the aim that our research of maritime labour in the Nineteenth Century can help us to understand the emergence and reproduction of the capitalist system. He is the formal Research Head of SeaLiT Barcelona team, responsible for technical aspects of the research, supervisor of the PhD student Eduard Page, while in the project his research will focus on dock workers in the port of Barcelona, 1850s-1920s.

Dr. Enric García Domingo (Post Doctoral Researcher)

Enric García Domingo (Barcelona, Spain, 1962) has a degree in History (Universitat de Barcelona) and a Doctorate in Modern History (Universitat de Barcelona), and he is interested in Maritime History in a broad scope. His dissertation topic was on labour in the Spanish Merchant Marine in the transition from sail to steam, 1834-1914.

Enric has published books and articles and has presented many papers in national and international meetings. He is currently the Head of the Department of Collections and Research at the Museu Marítim de Barcelona. He is also member of the research group TIG Treball, Institucions i Génere (Work, Institutions and Gender) of the Universitat de Barcelona. He is the main specialist of the SeaLiT Barcelona team about seafaring labour, and he will focus on changes in the life and work conditions on board.

Dr. Brendan J. von Briesen (Post Doctoral Researcher)

Brendan J. von Briesen (Baltimore, USA, 1978) earned his PhD in history from the Universitat de Barcelona for the dissertation "Service-sector Guilds and the Challenge of Liberalization: The organization of maritime-cargo handling in Barcelona, c.1760-1840".

His research interests include: labour history; popular history; economic development; and organizational strategies. He will work with the available statistical information about the tonnage, the ships and the crews that pass through for the port of Barcelona from 1850’s to 1920’s, especially with the information of the Junta Provincial de Sanidad de Barcelona.

Eduard Page Campos (PhD Student)

Eduard Page Campos (Barcelona, 1992) is a PhD student at the Universitat de Barcelona. He earned an undergraduate degree in History and he has recently specialized on Modern History with a Master’s Degree from the Universitat de Barcelona.

Through different courses, congresses, seminars and works he has focused his research interests in the field of social history and the patterns of social change, in the urban dynamics of the industrial city, and in Catalan maritime history. The contribution of Eduard to SeaLiT will be a thesis about the effects of technological innovation on the socio-economic structure and mentality of the maritime community of the Barceloneta district in Barcelona.

Daniel Muntané Pueyo (PhD Student)

Daniel Muntané Pueyo (Barcelona, 1987) is a PhD student at the Universitat de Barcelona. He has graduated in History (Universitat de Barcelona) and he has specialized in modern history through a master's degree in the same Universitat de Barcelona.

During his years of academic formation, he has been interested in Catalan and Spanish labour movement. Recently, in his specialization during the master's degree, he has added to his research interests the Catalan and Spanish maritime history. His contribution to SeaLit will be based on the research and study of maritime associations in the Spanish Mediterranean during the transition from sail to steam, 1850s-1920s.
