The chapter deals with the figure of ship director in sailing ships from Syros in the middle of the nineteenth century. This is a new element in the ship management of the age of sail in Greece. The figure of the director is quite distinctive from that of the captain who is assuming all the entrepreneurial tasks and duties of the ship, leaving only navigation to the captain.
