Historical Section is one of the two sections in which it is organized the documentation of the Naval Archive of Cartagena. Naval Archive of Cartagena is a military archive but contents lots of information about mercantile marine and fishing marine because the Navy had a strong legal responsibility about these civil issues. The Historical section is basically composed of the documents generated by the Maritime Department of Cartagena, from its creation until approximately 1930, with a volume of around 3000 files. Maritime Department of Cartagena integrated all the ports of East Mediterranean Spanish coast, from Catalonia to Murcia, including Balearic Islands. The Archive also has a collection of more than 8000 Spanish nautical charts and some 3,500 charts from different countries, from the 18th century until the present. The set is completed with a collection of Spanish and foreign nautical rutters, navigation books, astronomy, lighthouses, nautical almanacs, etc. There are also plans of ships built in the Arsenal of Cartagena, during the eighteenth to twentieth centuries, of buildings, machinery, etc.
