This is a classic book, a PhD dissertation that analyses the process of growth and development of the Spanish merchant marine between 1860 and 1935. Although the subject is the Basque shipping, if refers to the Spanish merchant marine in conjunct, so it is essential to understand the transition from sail to steam. Always from the economic history point of view, it deals with issues such as the role of demand in the development of the fleet, the technological changes and the business strategy, the capital formation, financing and investment, shipbuilding industry, institutional framework, etc. This work marked the after and before in the Spanish maritime historiography.
