Ugo Cova's work represents one of the main references for the study of navigation and maritime trade in Trieste and the Hapsburg Empire between the eighteenth and early twentieth century. The book is organized in two parts: the first one analyses the evolution of Trieste as a port from the age of empress Maria Theresa till the end of the Napoleonic period; the second focuses on the commercial relations between Trieste and the Italian peninsula during the long nineteenth century.
