Giulio Mellinato examines the roles of constituent elements of the maritime economy of the Venezia Giulia region - such as armament, shipbuilding and port activities - during the first forty years of the twentieth century. Through the study of the complex interweaving of relationships between three key-actors taken into consideration - the local entrepreneurial class, the credit system and the state apparatuses, Austrian-Hungarian first and Italian then - the author attempts to analyze the reasons that determined the gradual decline of the region after 1918.
