This is an unpublished Ph.D thesis based on the official statistic series of the Russian Empire; it analyzes the economic development of the Black Sea that was based on the grain trade. The work focuses on the reasons of the growth of the cereals export, namely the expansion of the productive hinterland, the combined transport networks and the transformation of the consumer markets. It examines the rise of the Black Sea region in the international grain trade, while also providing a valuable overview of the significance of the Black Sea commerce to the economic development of Russia.
