The subject of this study is the institution of the Matricula de Mar, the seafarers register that included seamen, fishermen, dock workers and shipbuilders. Although we could find the origin of the institution in the first decades of the seventeenth century, it became definitively organized along eighteen century, following the model of the French Inscription Maritime, and was abolished in 1872. The central focus is on seamen as workforce for the Navy but also for commercial activities and for the fishing fleet. Though the research focuses on eighteenth century, it is crucial also to understand the Spanish merchant marine in contemporary ages for it conditioned the organization of labour for decades, even after the end of the Ancien Régime.
